Did you know if you currently have Batts in your attic or fiberglass that is in great shape with no water damage or pests, we can add insulation on top to get your R-value to todays standard? Today’s attic R-value recommendation is R60 for new construction. If you currently have an R-value of 40 (R40) we can top up your insulation to an R60.

There are many different types of material on the market for your attic insulation. Blown in Fiberglass, Blown in Cellulose and Batt insulation.  There are many options to choose from and can lead to a feeling of being overwhelmed when making the decisions.  Over the years the most frequently used product is blown in Fiber glass insulation. Cellulose insulation is still used, and both provide a superior insulation benefits to your home.

Cellulose insulation: This product is made up of approximately 80% post-consumer recycled newspaper and 20% fire-retardant chemical binders.

Fiberglass insulation: This product does not settle and is manufactured in a lightweight and loose form from micron-thin strands of blown recycled glass and renewable silica sand and is fire retardant.

Great attic insulation will:

  • Prevent ice damming: An ice dam is a ridge of ice that forms at the edge of a roof and prevents melting snow (water) from draining off the roof. The water that backs up behind the dam can leak into a home and cause damage to walls, ceilings, insulation and other areas.
  • Save on energy costs

  • Increase value of your home

  • Improve interior air quality

  • Comfort

  • Prevent Moisture accumulation: when insulation in an attic is insufficient or damaged, it allows warm air to escape from the living space below and enter the attic. As soon as that happens, you have a condensation problem. Properly insulating the attic is pivotal in preventing moisture in attic.

  • Ventilation: Attic ventilation helps draw hot air outside during the warmer months of the year and reduces ice sheeting and ice dam buildup in the winter months.

  • Proper insulation and air sealing: Proper insulation and air sealing in your attic will prevent heat from escaping in the winter and heat entering your home in the summer.

  • Prolong the life of HVAC Equipment: The better the insulation in the home the less the HVAC system needs to work as the higher/proper R-Value prevent cold air/heat from entering your home or escaping.

What is an R-value? R-value is a measure of thermal resistance, the higher the R-value the more thermally resistant the material. The R-value for insulation can tell you how well it will keep heat from entering or leaving your home. The higher R-value means better climate control and better energy efficiency for your home.

In Ontario the R-value recommendation for exterior walls are: R24

R-value recommendations for Attics are: R60
