INSULATION REMOVAL
Types of insulation we remove
Why remove the insulation from an attic.
In most cases we can increase the R-value of insulation in your attic without removing any existing insulation by simply blowing fiberglass or cellulose overtop of the existing insulation and filling in any gaps. Improving the energy efficiency of your home and saving you money.
When insulation has become damaged or contaminated from pests, water damage, mould or mildew from insufficient ventilation, or insulation made from vermiculite containing asbestos has been used, these pose possible hazards to your health and indoor air quality, and the damaged insulation should be removed.
Insulation removal is only a part of the process. Repairs to a leaky roof, pest removal and decontamination, proper venting of appliances or mould remediation may need to be performed by a licensed contractor prior to reinsulating the attic.
Removing insulation allows for complete and proper air sealing and optimal results in terms of comfort. Our installers will ensure that the area is clean, properly air sealed and ventilated, vapor barrier installed if necessary and the new insulation is brought up to the proper R-value.
Vermiculite Insulation and Asbestos
Vermiculite is a type of insulation that was commonly used in older homes from the 1920’s to the late 1980’s. Not all vermiculite contains asbestos. Only one type of vermiculite sold was contaminated with asbestos. The Zonolite brand attic insulation was all mined from one site in Montana and contained varying levels of asbestos and was installed in homes in Canada.
Under no circumstances should you attempt to remove vermiculite containing asbestos from your attic. It must be done by a licensed asbestos abatement company. Asbestos is a known human carcinogen (causes cancer); it can cause scarring and inflammation of the lungs and lead to other serious health problems.
Vermiculite insulation in attics must be collected and sent for asbestos testing at a certified lab.
Please see the link for testing Pinchin Laboratories.
